Just found this podcast and I’m really enjoying it. One point I would like to make though about why recommendations in the reports were not acted on quicker. In respect of the Castlecarry crash you have to remember most of the big four were strapped for cash. The LNER in particular. The LNER did have plans for multi aspect signalling on its main lines. The war got in the way! Re-signalling between York and Newcastle was planned and was started. During the ECML electrification I can remember scrap signal heads coming back to the depot with LNER cast into them. They were just fitted by BR. You also have to remember that in the early to mid 1990s BR was being prepared for privatisation so cost cutting was going on and something had to give. This had a knock on effect until Network Rail came on the scene.
Anyway keep up the good work and informative podcasts.
Thanks Paul, great points you’ve made there. Thanks for listening!
